Someday this’ll be me, when I finally migrate my server from Linux to FreeBSD.
For now, I’m playing on hard mode and using an ASUS ROG laptop, which for the uninitiated, is a terrible experience on anything but Windows due to ASUS’s dogwater quality documentation.
Depends on what it’s doing and who has access in any way shape or form. Advice is always update your stuff and to update the kernel you still have to reboot.
This is more and less just an internal DNS server/filter now so I’m not that worried.
I consider the server a cellar, full of casks which contain my services. Everything… well almost everything is sandboxed, containerized, and ready to ship to a new machine. The containers each get rebooted during their updates, so the host server would ideally only go down for critical updates.
At work I use cbsd and just jcoldmigrate jails off the server, update the server, reboot it, move jails back then create a new base and update the jails to the new base when all nodes are done. Hardly any downtime this way. 👍
