I was playing the daily waffle the other day, or maybe it was onewordsearch, idk it was something on puzzlist. When I finish my word puzzles, I like to go look a the definitions for the words at the bottom of the page. I came accross the word “Share” in the list. I was surprised to find that “share” comes from an old english proto-indo-european word “Skaro” meaning to sever, or separate.

Any who… I read that and I started thinking about Doctor Who, specifically “Genesis of the Daleks”, part of Tom Baker’s run. For the unfamiliar, the Daleks are an omnicidal purifier race in the DW canon. Technogically enhanced and genetically modified to be the most persistent, most resilient race in the universe, the daleks started sort of similar to you and I.

Imagine: The year is 2090. The American Imperial unit and the Russian Imperial unit have been at war for 30 years. Most of the planet is a nuclear wasteland, those who survive suffer radiation damage, genetic defects, and incredible cancer rates. The military caste, those with the resources to endure – to ensure their survival through nuclear holocaust – prevails on all sides. Scientific minds in these castes research possibilities, survival and destruction. Save ourselves, destroy the other.

I want to be clear here, I’m not advocating violence, I just think humans who succumb to their baser instincts are quick to rely on it.

Daleks are a corruption. Evolution can’t create something which is a fanatical purifier, that doesn’t happen naturally. It is a sickness that cures itself. If one can be the only life, there can be nothing to sustain it. Daleks were created in a lab. A modification of their progenitor, the Kaleds.

I wonder if the Namuhs will be as bad. I wonder if they’ll be feared around the universe. I wonder if they’ll have metal shells and look like writhing cephalopods underneath.

I’ve been looking for an ending to this post for 3 days. I’m posting as is. Maybe it will be edited later, stay tuned.
