## Howdy folks!
I'm Nora / ArsonButCute. You can find me here, and in the fediverse.

# Entry 2
I'm a software development student in New Mexico born in the mid 90s. Ever since I was a child I yearned for the newest tech and nonsense. In my mid 20's I realized I'd been tricked by the industry, stuck on the train of upgrades and planned obsolescence. Nowadays you'll find me scaling back. I have recently purchased a `privacy focused` dumbphone with a wifi hotspot so I can use my tech according to how I want it, rather than being an always on beacon for datascrapers constantly broadcasting what my last fart smells like to Petey Thiel and friends.

## Social media used to be fun right?
I got on Myspace when I was like 8 or 9 years old, way before I was allowed to have an account. Facebook I waited til I was 12. Still too young. We didn't know. Well, I didn't know. I wanted my own spot on the internet. I wanted my website with my posts and my pictures. I wanted it to have my wallpaper and my neat song that plays when you click onto the site. Myspace was ... Cool... I think, I'm not the best judge of `cool`.

## Google lied to me.
Now granted, this was back in the day when SEO was a legitimate career and Google was a search engine instead of an LLM peddling databroker masquereding as a technofiefdom. Back when I found myspace, it was *because* my mother made me an account, specifically because I wanted my own website, and she figured since she had an account she could monitor me.
So imagine you're me, little 8/9 year old kid who wants a website. You go to the place you find stuff online, Google. You type "How to make a website" and press return. It says here I need this thing called Adobe Dreamweaver, or Microsoft Visual Studio. Now, I'm a child. The amount of money I'd ever seen at a time back then couldn't buy a Patty Melt meal from Whataburger today, let alone an IDE. Thats not to mention that I didn't even know what an IDE was and was just following the advice of whoever had the best SEO.

## Vi will do fine
I've been in school for a little over a semester now. And if theres one thing I've learned in my time there it's that massive bloated IDE's only serve to latch developers onto their teat. Fuck Copilot. And like, I'm not one of the AI haters, I love it I run selfhosted (read: lobotomized) models on my server and PC's all the time, I think they're great tools... sometimes. Copilot took over 20 lines of Python to calculate factorials. I could do it in 5 as a first semester python student.
Obviously, given clear evidence that the AI coding tools only give the illusion of efficiency, instead offloading the inefficiency onto the end-user's hardware, I removed VScode and VScodium, from all my machines. Hello NVchad, I guess we're learning Lua? Used a pretty barebones NVChad setup for a bit then moved over to Lunarvim. For something like gemini development though, I don't need fancy type catching or linting or syntax verification or pattern recognition. Basic barebones vi will do fine.

## An app can't help you fix your relationship with tech
I used to spend literal hours at a time scrolling short form content on my smartphone. I still have a smartphone, I use it to check Lemmy way too often, I can't wait for this dumbphone to get here in the mail. I remember sitting on my couch one day with my partner. They we're writing a blog post, I was watching Youtube on my HTPC. I found a video, as if handed down from the Algorithm Gods who suddenly realized I had a problem. It was titled "Why games all suck now" or "Why you don't enjoy gaming anymore" or something like that. I figured it was gonna be some memey shitpost about BeThEsDa JAnK and whatnot but gave it a chance anyway, after all who doesn't want a chance to talk shit about subsidiaries of the 'empirically supportive of [REDACTED], Microsoft' (imperialism bad).
So what was it Nora? What was the reason all games suck now? THEY DON'T. TikTok, instagram reels, facebook reels, youtube shorts, Xaohongshu clips, instagram stories, facebook stories, fuck even telegram has stories now (as of the writing of this post that 'feature' is actually no longer available). Short form content is killing our enjoyment of things. Once upon a time, all that energy that 100 years ago would've been spent on cataloging every subset of non-elytratic beetle native to the square mile surrounding your friend tim's horse barn, was redirected to the arcade. Gaming was everywhere, it was cool, and by the early 2010's had become so ubiquitous in the US that you'd stuggle to find a home without a console, at the very least a Nintendo Wii for family party games, fitness apps, and netflix.
Microblogging was fine, obviously everyone on earth needs to know I just pooped in 170 characters or less, I've never seen a more potentially toxic form of social media but thats fine, people like their slop. Then Vine happened. Oh Jack, that's two IV's full of infinite slop you've given us... I hope this stuff isn't addicti

It's the sound of time running out. How much of your life have you donated to Tencent, Meta, Alphabet? How many miles have you scrolled?

Log off. Touch Grass.
Nora.
